Sugar Ray Robinson, The greatest and Pound for Pound American professional boxer
Below in this page, let’s tell the story and achievement of the very popular American Boxer who is often regarded as the greatest boxer of all time and in 1990 was indicted into the Hall of Fame.

The name Sugar Ray Robinson is still known all over the globe and many people like Boxer Historian, Bert sugar said that Robinson could deliver a knockout blow going backwards, this a many more wrestlers have given praises to Sugar Robinson, like when Gold Boxer Muhammad Ali called Sugar Ray “the king, the master, my idol.”
So, if you’re not yet aware, Sugar Ray Robinson was American professional boxer who was born on May 3rd 1921 in Ailey Georgia as Walker Smith Jr. His parents were Walker Smith sr. Leila Hurst who later separated. He was the youngest of three children of her parents and his family weren’t rich as his father was a cotton, peanut, and corn farmer in Georgia.
His family later on moved to Detroit and there his father found work in construction and also worked 2 other jobs to support his family, he worked as a cement mixer and sewer worker.
“He had to get up at six in the morning and he’d get home close to midnight. Six days a week. The only day I really saw him was Sunday … I always wanted to be with him more.”
Like I said earlier, his parents separated later on in Detroit when he was just 12 and has to move with his mother to New York City neighborhood of Harlem and had to drop out of school in 9th grade and that’s when Robinson who initially wanted to be a doctor took a turn and his goal to boxing.
Two years later, when he was 14 he attempted to enter his first boxing tournament but didn’t have an AAU membership card and can procure the card legally at 16 butbhe couldn’t wait so he circumvented the age requirement by using an ID card from a youth named Ray Robinson, who had quit boxing at the time.
That’s were, Walker Smith Jr now got the name Ray Robinson and fight under the name till it stuck and the Sugar in his name was added later in his career when a lady in the audience at a fight in Watertown, New York, said he was “sweet as sugar,”.
In no time, Sugar Ray Robinson become a pro boxer fighting for over 3 decades of his life competing 1940-1965 and was widely regarded as one of the greatest boxers of all time and compared to the great Muhammad Ali who has stated that Robinson was was beautiful. Timing, speed, reflexes, rhythm, his body, everything was beautiful. I’d say I’m the greatest heavyweight of all time, but pound-for-pound, I still say Sugar Ray Robinson was the greatest of all time.
Sugar Ray Robinson was known for his classy and flamboyant lifestyle outside the ring and known to have started the Modern boxing sport and history can’t re his exact record and achievement but there are many to be remembered like him holding the world welterweight title from 1946-1951 and won the world middleweight title in 1951 year.
Sugar Ray Robinson also became the 1st boxer in history to win a divisional world championship 5 times and again in 1990, was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
Still on the Achievement of Ray Robinson, you should know that Ray in his boxing career has fought 201 fights with 174 wins and only 19 losses.
Robinson first built a record of 40–0 before it was broken after he loses for the first time to LaMotta in a 10-round re-match and in 1946, Robinson had fought 75 fights and a 73–1–1 record and also at the age of 19 in 1951, hold a record of 128–1–2 with 84 KO’s.
His is also the 3rd-longest unbeaten striker in pro boxing history gaining been on a 91-fight unbeaten streak from1943-1951.
Robinson continued to fight until late 1965, when he was 45 years old and on April 12, 1989, Sugar Ray Robinson died at 67.
He died from Alzheimer whcuh he was diagnosed with a few years earlier and after his death in 1990, he entered the boxing hall of and and in 2006, was featured on a commemorative stamp by the United States Postal Service.
